When I look at your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him and the son of man that you care for him?
Psalm 8:3-4
The universe is super huge and a magnificent backdrop of God’s creation. It has been said that from the earth to the farthest observable outer space is approximately 46 billion light years. I don’t know about you, but it is an impossibility for my mind to even begin to think in numbers that large.
Sometimes we need to take a few minutes and consider the same thing David did in Psalm 8. He gazed intently into the sky, and realized the size of the universe. It caused him to gain an interesting perspective.
Why does God think about us?
David asked God. “What is man that you are mindful of him?” Who am I that God would even think about me? Why am I so significant that Godu would think about me? I ask this question often after I’ve sinned. “Why would God care about me when all I do is continue to sin?” What is it about God that causes Him to think about me? It’s because God is full of grace and mercy. Of the 7 billion people who live on the earth, God loves me.
I think of David lying on his back under the stars on a dark night and gazing at the millions of stars in the sky. He sees the moon and stars and considers God’s creeation. David had a simple understanding of God’s enormous universe. More importantly, David was confronted with the size of the universe and its Creator. Why does this matter?
To understand, we have to understand that these verses have nothing really to do with us. I see these verses as David comprehending God’s intentional purpose to have a relationship with man. God is mindful of us, but it doesn’t mean that we are the center of the universe. It means God is at the center. Maybe it’s time to take the focus away from us and focus on God.
Why does God care for us?
God doesn’t simply think about you, but He also cares deeply for you wtih an amazing love. If you are a Christ-follower, He cares for you because you are His and he has a father/child relationship with us. Ephesians 2:12-13 reminds us that we were once far off from God, but because of Christ we have been brought near. That is the miraculous mystery of Christ. We were brought near to God through Christ In a universe that expands beyond our comprehension to grasp it. That is why He cares for us.
But, this care is not automatic. Remember the Ephesians verses? God primarily concern for us is that we place our faith in His son, Jesus, because this is what brings us close. It begins an intimate relationship with the Creator of the universe. This action allows us access to God (Ephesians 1:18).
He cares about every decision we make and every thought we think. He walks with us through difficulty, sadness, and even the great moments in our lives.
This relationship is a real game-changer. it changes everything!
