But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.
John 14:26-27
God precisely knew what we needed when He sent the Holy Spirit. I know many of us are uncomfortable thinking about the Holy Spirit because of how some have taken His wonderful works to excess and caused great confusion. But if we allow Him to do what God said He would do, it is not only helpful but transformative. We all go through times of disappointment, despair, incredible sorrow, and freezing uncertainty. At those times, we desperately need the Holy Spirit. We experience times of tense uncertainty when making difficult decisions. No worries. God gave us the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is our Helper
The word used to describe the Holy Spirit is the same word used to describe Eve in the Bible. The Holy Spirit is a perfect helper for us. While the Holy Spirit does not necessarily help our common sense, He does provide a supernatural understanding of our circumstances. When it comes to decision-making in tough times, I sometimes hesitate, and more than often forget to rely on Him.
I sometimes even forget He’s there to help me. Yes. A pastor forgetting the Holy Spirit’s primary purpose in my life. I know I’m a work in progress, but if I intend to make better decisions, I need to allow Him to help me in those significant times of need.
The Holy Spirit is our Teacher
Do you realize we are all in school? I didn’t love school when I was younger, but little did I know that I would be in school the rest of my life. For the Holy Spirit to be our Helper, He must also be our teacher. And a teacher can only teach us effectively when we seek to learn what’s being taught. John 14:26 tells us that He teaches us all things and helps us to remember those past activities and learning in our lives that should help us make better decisions.
He also helps us remember important Scripture that should provide what we need to make decisions.
How are you doing in this area? Do you rest in Him and allow Him to teach you? I realize it isn’t easy because we don’t think we need any help if you are like most people. We know so much. We don’t need anyone to tell us how to do things or even what to do. We can sustain our own lives. We’re smart and have great wisdom. But if we’re honest with ourselves, we desperately need the Holy Spirit.
Will you take some time this morning and pray for Him to teach you great things today that will help you as you work to make it another day?
Finally, once taught, we need to apply what we’ve learned. That’s the point of teaching. After He teaches us, we take that knowledge and apply it to our situations. That application is wisdom. Remember, the only way to benefit from wisdom is to live it out in your life every day.
Will you?
