Come out of sadness from wherever you’ve been
Come broken hearted let rescue begin
Come find your mercy oh sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens lay down your shame
All who are broken lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home you’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are
-David Crowder

This past weekend I had the privilege to go to a concert with the students in our student ministry. I can’t tell you how great it was and how much God moved in my heart as I heard some of the artists as they sang and spoke from their hearts. But I have to say that one of the sweetest times for me was listening to David Crowder as he sang, “Come as You Are.” This song is rich with meaning and hope, and I wanted to take a few minutes this morning and share the first part of it with you.

There’s Rescue for the Broken-Hearted

I don’t know where you are today, but I bet you’ve experienced or are experiencing a broken heart. Maybe it’s a relationship or something that happened in your past. Perhaps it’s something going on in your marriage or family. It could be that you lost a loved one this past year. Whatever it is, Jesus is here for you.

Jesus is not just available, but He is always ready to rescue.

It could be sin in your life. I believe unconfessed sin in your life is one of the most difficult and trying things for you to work through. David dealt with that problem in Psalm 51 after his adulterous affair with Bathsheba.

So what do you do? You must realize that Jesus desires that reconciliation and is waiting for you to kneel before Him and receive the rescue. Don’t allow sin to rule your day and your life. Sin can take your day and turn it into depression. As Crowder wrote, “Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal; Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal.”

It’s Time to Come Home

This healing is fantastic news. The rescue is easy. It’s time for you to come home. If you’ve ever placed your trust in Jesus,

it’s time to come home. If you’ve never put your trust in Jesus, it’s time to come home.

The next part of Crowder’s song is powerful. “All who are broken lift up your face.” When Jesus takes bears your burdens, you have no reason to look down.

Lift up your face. Look up. There’s no reason to carry your shame.

Satan would love nothing more than for you to walk around in depression and guilt. Lift up your face. Jesus has taken your burden. Your sins are forgiven and held against you no more.

So what should you do? Turn from your sins and turn to Jesus. “Lay down your burdens and lay down your shame.” Remember, there is no condemnation for those who love Jesus (Romans 8:1). But what does it mean to lay down your burdens? It means that we carry them no more. We pray to the Lord and ask him to take those sins away. We repent of our sins and trust Him to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 9).

Here’s the key. You must be willing to lay down our hurt and heart and come as you are. Jesus came to rescue us from sin, death, and hell. He is patient, loving, and cares deeply for you. Trust Him. Love Him. Lay down your hurt. Lay down your heart. Come as you are. When you come as you are, you come with no pride but with complete honesty and humility. That’s how you do it. Humility is the key to living a life that honors Jesus and keeps you in a place where sin and depression can’t defeat you.

Jesus wants to rescue you.

A prayer…

Jesus, I know that you are the One I need to rescue me from the depression I’m facing today. But I also realize the sin in my life is causing my life to spiral out of control. I desperately need You and have been putting it off for too long. I want to lay my burdens down and come as I am. I’m tired of resisting your grace. Thank you, Jesus, for loving me.
